Get Healthy and Save the American Economy

It may seem a bit of a stretch saying ‘Get Healthy, Save the American Economy’… sounds a bit like ‘Save the Cheerleader – Save the World!’ right?  But let’s take a look at how this really works.  How would the American economy be different if we all took our health and wellness a little more seriously?  How much more money would we have in our own pockets?

The Dollar in Your pocket!

We all have an optimum weight.  That’s the weight you should be if you ate right and exercised the way you were made to.  Now statistics show that for every 10lbs of additional weight, you spend around a thousand dollars gaining it.  What about if you’re 50lbs over weight?  That’s five thousand dollars, right?  And of course, many of us who have been overweight, joined Weight Watchers, joined the local gym, bought a Bowflex, or invested in countless other weight loss programs and gimmicks.  We spend a fortune losing a few pounds, then go and put it all back on again.  It’s a vicious and expensive circle!

The annual health insurance cost for someone at their optimal weight is around $3,254. The cost of insuring a severely obese person is very much higher.  The reason is that the severely obese are subject to heart disease, strokes and many other weight related ailments.  The medical fees to treat these conditions are huge… treatment for a heart attack, for example,  costs around $44,000, $40,200 for a stroke or $37,000 for end-state kidney disease.  The risks involved in insuring the overweight goes directly onto the insurance premium.

It is estimated that by 2015, around 75% of the US population will be overweight… The United States has a population of over 300 million; that means over 200 million people in this country will be overweight!  Now consider the insurance premium for an overweight person against the premium for someone at their optimum weight.  That’s a lot of money!

What about on a business level?

The McKinsey Quarterly Chart Focus Newsletter, “Will Health Benefit Costs Eclipse Profits,” September, 2004 states, “Health insurance expenses are the fastest growing cost component for employers.  Unless something changes dramatically, health insurance costs will overtake profits by 2008.”

Obese employees in the US cost private employers around $45 billion annually in medical costs and work days lost. Cardiovascular disease costs more than $274 billion in nationwide health care.  Diabetes accounts for $98.2 billion annually in medical costs and $40 billion annually in indirect costs.

Research (and common sense) shows that healthy employees increase production and profit.  It should be a ‘no brainer’ that businesses do everything in their power to encourage the health and wellness of those employees.  But more often than not, they don’t!

If the solution to the sky rocketing medical bills is just to live healthier lives, why is it so hard?

People say to me all the time “well you’re just a fitness trainer who’s crazy about exercise and I am not… I don’t have time to exercise… my work schedule doesn’t allow me to prepare healthy food all the time so I eat when I can from a fast food restaurant”.  The list and excuses go on…

Let’s discuss why your objections to getting healthy are ridiculous and expensive.

Time: There are 24 hours in a day. Don’t tell me you can’t commit at least one of them to exercising. Come on, you treat your household pet better than that.

Cost: So running outside, going hiking, swimming is expensive?  I don’t think so.  It costs nothing to go walking or running, swimming at your local community pool costs around $3, hiking costs nothing, and no offense, a minimum gym payment of $20 -$30 per month doesn’t even add up to a week’s worth of lattes or a night out.  Compare that to your first heart attack!

Spouse:  It’s time we took responsibility for our health and the health of our loved ones. No matter how many times you say “I love you just the way you are”, wouldn’t you actually prefer it if your spouse was a little leaner, had a fit and healthy body?  Wouldn’t you prefer that for yourself?

Education: There are resources out there to advise and help you to get back into shape through good exercise and healthy living.  I’m a highly educated fitness trainer and have developed a fitness program for all shapes and sizes.  My book, ‘Healthy Fitness Central’ is written for men and women and offers advice on exercising in the home, gym, track, pool or wherever else you have some space.  If people just took some of that advice and looked after their body’s a little better, just think of the impact on their lives, and ultimately or the whole health care system!

Genetics:  If you have a family history of diabetes II and high blood pressure, that means you have a family history of being fat and out of shape. DO something about it. Do you want your kids to be like that?

Motivation: Let me let you in on a little secret. One of the reasons why you aren’t motivated to work-out, is because you’re content to be who you are. You’re content to accept that you can never look or feel different. Your body hates to exercise because you hate it. Your body hates to exercise because you do the wrong things. You train the wrong way or you don’t train at all. Your body hates to exercise because you DON’T ever exercise.  Your body is toxic and out of shape.

You must get in shape. It’s not about motivation, it’s about managing to live as long as possible and be around for your family. You don’t need to drop 50lbs tomorrow. Dramatic weight loss programs are unrealistic and unhealthy.  But getting in shape through a structure exercise and nutrition program is realistic, achievable and life saving. Anyone can do it… YOU can do it!

The christinmcdowell.com website provides resources to help you stay committed to getting back in shape and staying healthy.  One of these resources is my 5 day per week boot camp.  If you live in Renton or Tukwila WA, I strongly recommend you join it.  Fitness boot camps provide the discipline and motivation to stick at a healthy lifestyle plan.  If you can’t make my boot camp, look for another one but get out there and start exercising.  It’s just not that hard!

If you don’t live in the area, you need to do some serious soul searching and figure out what objections are holding you back from getting your body back, getting in shape and feeling great. Write them down and then overcome them. If you want advice, email me and I will be happy to help.

So America, you really can help the economy and your budget by just taking a little better care of yourself.  So I’ll say again “Get Healthy, Save the American Economy”.

How to Lose Weight

Myths, Errors and what’s really Right!

SOMEHOW, the diet and fitness media and marketing world has put together all sorts of assortments that will make you think you will lose the weight, but only to be a selling gimmick! The weight loss industry is one of the largest out there, and why? Because people want a quick pill or device that will melt the fat off for them! Spare yourself the waste and realize this: Losing weight comes down to a very simple equation: If the amount of calories you eat in a day exceed the amount you burn, you will gain weight! If the amount you eat is less than you burn, you will lose weight!

So your journey of weight loss begins with a Healthy Tart style of eating! The 30 day detox is meant to clean up the damage you’ve done to your digestive, endocrine and cardiovascular system, and my workouts will help get you fit, strong and a fat burning machine! So if you haven’t already, you need to seriously bucker down and evaluate what and how much you are putting into your mouth!

Next is exercise. We know that exercise burns calories, and burning fat is all about burning calories.

The thing I want you to grasp is that burning fat and getting fit happen at the same time; they’re not independent of each other.

The more total calories you burn, the more fat you will burn. Therefore, you want your workouts to be challenging and intense!

How to Lose Weight!

If you’re mosying through your workouts, not pushing yourself, and are doing the same thing everyday, DON’T expect your body to change. It won’t. So, progress your workouts! Do things you don’t like doing! You’ll burn more total fat with more intense workouts, and you’ll get fitter, faster!

Don’t worry about the whole “Fat Burning Zone” and “Cardiovascular Zone”! It’s crap! The more calories you burn, the faster the weight will come off and the faster you will become fit!

The unfortunate thing is, if you’ve been sitting on your butt for the past 5-10 years, or even 6 months, you can’t go crazy your first day back, nor your first week! You need to follow your heart rate prescription until you healthy enough to turn on the juice! Don’t worry though, your workouts WILL seem challenging and will make you lose weight, if you haven’t been doing anything for a while. Focus on sticking to your 7 Day Layouts, (not missing workouts) and eating like a Healthy Tart.

I have made your workouts specifically and safely catered for where you are at, and what you can do, each step of the way. They are specifically designed to strengthen up your body, clear, clean and strengthen your cardiovascular system, and make you lose weight at the same time.

As variety is also essential for maximizing fat loss, I have included different kinds of exercise: swimming, aquajogging, track workouts, weight workouts, biking, stair stepper and elliptical. So FOLLOW MY WORKOUTS. They will make you succeed, no matter where you are!

The Issue of Metabolism

I was recently asked about metabolism and why people can’t just seem to lose weight. Here’s my reply:

In the issue of metabolism, metabolism in the breakdown of calories will be the same for everyone. When you exercise, you burn calories, and the rate at which you burn them wont change unless you have a bunch of muscle mass, for which we women don’t need to worry about.

SO- with metabolism, you’ve got to exercise if you want to burn fat and lose weight. (I’m not addressing the metabolism of food right yet). 95% of the trainers out there train their females WRONG. That is why I highly encourage you both to come to my event. You MUST exercise to burn calories- lots of them. So this doesn’t mean weight training, riding on some stationary bike or even walking (unless you weigh 100lbs too much), this means running, swimming, sprinting- stuff that will burn SERIOUS calories. The good thing is that this form of training is the kind of training that will benefit your cardiovascular health the best… You don’t want to start off right away with that form of training if you’re just starting out, or if you have medical problems, but if should be your goal to get there.

I will talk more in detail during my presentation at the next Healthy Tart event, if you cannot attend, please get a copy of my book, Healthy Fitness Central.

As far as your food metabolism, I haven’t yet heard a woman out there who has a high metabolism. Our hormones were made to store fat, that’s what we were “blessed” with… due to this God given natural phenomenon, we have got to evaluate the foods we are eating. If you think you eat well, but you’re not losing weight, there’s no catch. YOU’RE NOT eating as well as you think. We’re not freaks of nature. Our metabolisms are all pretty much the same. We can alter them through exercise and how much of it we do, and we can alter it through drugs and shots, (which I don’t endorse!).

I can be in denial as much as I want to of why I can’t lose weight, but really what it comes down to is, how much and the quality of food I am eating. You must eat CLEAN food. This probably doesn’t mean what you are thinking.

I want you to take a look at this woman.

http://ola-life.org/videos.php Look at her making Living Cacao Cream Pie, Nori Rolls, and Spring Rolls.

She eats 100% pure and organic food and she is vegan. She is the leanest natural person I’ve ever seen, and she’s pregnant. OBVIOUSLY she’s got it down. She’s serving her body and her body is serving her. She inspires me to want to change and be even better. She eats like a Healthy Tart would.

So, even though you are thinking you are eating the right stuff, you’re not if you’re not at your optimal weight. Something is wrong. Something you are DOING is wrong.

We can explore this further together in the Healthy Tart event.

Yes, your metabolism slightly slows down in your 40′s and 50′s.. WHY? Because you become LESS ACTIVE and you start losing muscle mass because you are LESS ACTIVE. Christine is a testament to that. She easily lost 60lbs and she’s over 50. It’s not rocket science people, it’s really quite simple.
