Can A Detoxification and Weight Loss Programme Work Together ?

The answer is quite clearly yes!

The best you can do for your body is to have it clean inside and out – this will lead to having a far more efficient working system which will in turn lead to an increased metabolism ensuring the foods you eat are delivered to the right cells in your body for ultimate nutrition, wellness and balance.

Body cleansing or detoxing, as it is commonly known, is a fabulous way to promote weight loss. Over time, through poor diet and exposure to environmental toxins, our bodies gather toxic waste materials, which are held in our cells, organs and fat. This will lead to a sluggish metabolism, high acidity and disease as well as weight gain.  The body just cannot be efficient when it is all clogged up – just like the engine in the car.

Cleansing the body with a suitable body detoxification program creates the ideal environment for efficient weight loss.  Using natural foods and pure water over a period of time is the only way to achieve the best you can, there is no quick fix, no need for fancy products, pills or potions.  A natural body detox, in which we cleanse our body of stored toxins will not only help with weight loss but it will increase energy and clarity for motivation as well as ensuring we are keeping ourselves free from disease. Cleansing our intestines of built up waste material will decrease bloating, bringing down as much as a few inches from our waistline. It will make for an efficient lymphatic system which can then do the job it is intended to do wiping out bacteria and viruses helping us to feel better and look better. A purified body will operate better, and our metabolic rate will increase, which means that your body will burn more calories for the same amount of activity.

The first step is to find a suitable detox programme. If it’s your first time you will no doubt feel daunted by the massive amount of material available through stores, books, the internet and other media.  The best thing is to think natural all the time, go back to the hunter gatherer days, eat what is in season and as local as possible. Many body cleanse regimens emphasize only one part of the body i.e the liver cleanse, this is all well and good but without having every system and organ functioning fully will lead to a hold up in your progress.

  • A tremendous amount of body cleansing plans can really do more harm than good.
  • Extended fasting with a lack of nourishment is problematic, and many herbal detox products promise big results contain significant amounts of intense purgative herbs.
  • Pick your body detox plan with care.
  • Check out only those that have been written by professionals with a history of clients that have been successful.
  • Do not follow celebrity programmes as they were designed around the celebrity not for general use.
  • If you are feeling really sick, consult with a health care provider such as a nutritionist or even your Doctor.
  • You don’t need to spend money on pills, potions and other get fit quick schemes.

Detox Diet Plan Success Story

Here is a story about a friend’s husband! This could be you or your spouse even! I bet you know someone like this too – maybe it’s you!

I have recently been working with a friend’s husband – yes a friend of mine of 15 years. You would think they would be interested in their health because they knew me, not so! Her husband would not deal with his weight problems. He ended up by the time he got to his 50th birthday with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 11 diabetes, not a combination of disease that anyone would want and STILL he would not deal with it. He simply accepted the medication from the doctor – until a month ago when he was threatened with divorce !!! SERIOUSLY – my friend could not face a future with a husband who would become an invalid.

Health Symptoms Helped With A Detox Diet Plan

Do you suffer with from any of the following symptoms?

  • Digestive problems – IBS – Colitis – Diverticulitis – Constipation – Diarrhoea …and more
  • Migraine – Headaches – Fuzzy Head – Lack of Concentration
  • Asthma or other respiratory problem including post nasal drip and sinus irritation
  • Snoring – Sleep Apnoea – Sleeping Difficulties
  • Eczema – Psoriases – Dry Scaly Skin or other skin condition
  • Menopause – PMT/S – Period Pains and Nausea – Infertility – PCOS
  • Diabetes –Blood Sugar Handling Problems – Dizzy When Meals Missed
  • Candida – Thrush – Fungal infections “Jock Itch” Excessive Perspiration
  • Alopecia – Hair Thinning – Weakened Hair
  • Overweight – Underweight – Metabolic Disorders
  • Thyroid and Other Hormonal Disorders
  • Stress – Irritability – Mood Swings – Depression

These are just some of the symptoms that can be helped with a detox diet plan.

Feeling down? It could be SAD!

SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder

This disorder affects many people, particularly during the winter months or when there is not enough daylight.  People who do not normally sufferer with any mental ill health can, particularly during December and January, suddenly feel very low and somewhat depressed.  For those people who already have mental health issues, the winter months can sometimes cause a deepening of their symptoms.

What causes one to feel SAD ?

A lack of natural, full spectrum light, which reduces the amount of Melatonin secreted by the Pineal Gland.

The Pineal gland (part of the endocrine (hormonal) system) is a small cone shaped organ which sits in the centre of the brain (mystics call this the third eye).  It converts incoming nerve impulses received as bio-electrical messages about the outside environment (full spectrum light) into outgoing hormones in the blood stream (vascular system).

During daylight the Pineal Gland , which is highly responsive to the amount of light to which we are exposed, releases very little melatonin but at night melatonin secretion triples to help regulate our circadium rhythms (internal clock, sleeping and waking cycles).

As melatonin rises and is secreted you begin to experience a hypnotic-like state which helps to bring sleep on.  In the morning when daylight returns melatonin decreases again.

When you get lots of bright sunlight during the day Melatonin is secreted in the hours of darkness.  When not enough full spectrum light is available during the day there will not be enough melatonin to be secreted.  This will cause SAD and/or chronic depression.

There is always more to SAD than the above as one must take into consideration the whole of the person, their lifestyle, medical history, family history, childhood, career, stress and most importantly diet.

I would work on the principle that the person who has SAD will have some form of depression, linked to a hormonal issue and/or any of the above.  More women than men suffer with this problem, or so we think, as men do not often admit to having any problems and this can sometimes be linked to Mothers who spend a lot of time indoors with their children during winter.

A good diet is essential, using wholefoods, preferably organic or better still biodynamic.  These foods should be of the season so typically wintertime roots, leaves, stems, nuts, seeds.

Anyone, particularly with depression or SAD will require regular mealtimes and snacks to keep the blood sugar levels balanced and therefore energy at its peak.

The following is a list of vitamins and minerals specifically required and which foods they are available from.

B Vitamins found in the following foods listed in order of importance in my opinion, preferring more of the first 7 points as these are less taxing on the digestive system and unless the others are organic they can add to the load of not just digestion but the liver and immunity.

  • Pulses (beans) lentils, chick peas
  • Wholegrains (rice, quinoa, millet, buckwheat etc), Wheatgerm
  • Vegetables such as dark green leaves, mushrooms, cauliflower, tomatoes, avocado, squash, celery
  • Spirulina and other sea vegetables (*see note below for vegan’s)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Soya products
  • Strawberries, bananas, dried fruits
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Dairy products
  • Meat and poultry
  • Organ meats

A note on B12 for Vegans

Vegans using adequate amounts of fortified foods or B12 supplements are much less likely to suffer from B12 deficiency than the typical meat eater. The Institute of Medicine, in setting the US recommended intakes for B12 makes this very clear. “Because 10 to 30 percent of older people may be unable to absorb naturally occurring vitamin B12, it is advisable for those older than 50 years to meet their RDA mainly by consuming foods fortified with vitamin B12 or a vitamin B12-containing supplement.” Vegans should take this advice about 50 years younger, to the benefit of both themselves and the animals. B12 need never be a problem for well-informed vegans.

*Spirulina – The vegetarian Society says this:

The only reliable unfortified sources of vitamin B12 are meat, dairy products and eggs. There has been considerable research into possible plant food sources of B12. Fermented soya products, seaweeds and algae have all been proposed as possible sources of B12. However, analysis of fermented soya products, including tempeh, miso, shoyu and tamari, found no significant B12.

Spirulina, an algae available as a dietary supplement in tablet form, and nori, a seaweed, have both appeared to contain significant amounts of B12 after analysis. However, it is thought that this is due to the presence of compounds structurally similar to B12, known as B12 analogues. These cannot be utilised to satisfy dietary needs. Assay methods used to detect B12 are unable to differentiate between B12 and it’s analogues, Analysis of possible B12 sources may give false positive results due to the presence of these analogues.

All these tests are, as yet, inconclusive, as are many tests for many reasons but it is worth being as sure as you possibly can and maybe it woulod be a good idea to have a blood test although it is said that a blood B12 level measurement is unreliable test for vegans, particularly vegans using any form of algae such as spirulina and some other plant foods containing B12-analogues (false B12) that can imitate true B12 in blood tests while actually interfering with B12 metabolism. Blood counts are also unreliable as high folate intakes suppress the anaemia symptoms of B12 deficiency that can be detected by blood counts. Blood homocysteine testing is more reliable, with levels less than 10 mmol/litre being desirable.  The most specific test for B12 status is methylmalonic acid (MMA) testing.  If this is in the normal range in blood (<370 nmol/L) or urine (less than 4 mg /mg creatinine) then your body has enough B12. Many doctors still rely on blood B12 levels and blood counts. These are not adequate, especially in vegans.

Other minerals

Magnesium

  • From the food groups listed above

Chromium

  • As above but particularly including root vegetables and green peppers

On top of this a good all round range of foods which are in season, ripened naturally, locally grown will enhance mood as will the colour of foods we see influence what we eat, this will be affected by the hormone system which is inextricably linked to SAD.

There are many reasons that people find they have this disorder.  If you feel you have SAD, but are unsure, complete the online profile so that I can detect anything else that may be causing your symptoms and then offer a solution.

Get Healthy and Save the American Economy

It may seem a bit of a stretch saying ‘Get Healthy, Save the American Economy’… sounds a bit like ‘Save the Cheerleader – Save the World!’ right?  But let’s take a look at how this really works.  How would the American economy be different if we all took our health and wellness a little more seriously?  How much more money would we have in our own pockets?

The Dollar in Your pocket!

We all have an optimum weight.  That’s the weight you should be if you ate right and exercised the way you were made to.  Now statistics show that for every 10lbs of additional weight, you spend around a thousand dollars gaining it.  What about if you’re 50lbs over weight?  That’s five thousand dollars, right?  And of course, many of us who have been overweight, joined Weight Watchers, joined the local gym, bought a Bowflex, or invested in countless other weight loss programs and gimmicks.  We spend a fortune losing a few pounds, then go and put it all back on again.  It’s a vicious and expensive circle!

The annual health insurance cost for someone at their optimal weight is around $3,254. The cost of insuring a severely obese person is very much higher.  The reason is that the severely obese are subject to heart disease, strokes and many other weight related ailments.  The medical fees to treat these conditions are huge… treatment for a heart attack, for example,  costs around $44,000, $40,200 for a stroke or $37,000 for end-state kidney disease.  The risks involved in insuring the overweight goes directly onto the insurance premium.

It is estimated that by 2015, around 75% of the US population will be overweight… The United States has a population of over 300 million; that means over 200 million people in this country will be overweight!  Now consider the insurance premium for an overweight person against the premium for someone at their optimum weight.  That’s a lot of money!

What about on a business level?

The McKinsey Quarterly Chart Focus Newsletter, “Will Health Benefit Costs Eclipse Profits,” September, 2004 states, “Health insurance expenses are the fastest growing cost component for employers.  Unless something changes dramatically, health insurance costs will overtake profits by 2008.”

Obese employees in the US cost private employers around $45 billion annually in medical costs and work days lost. Cardiovascular disease costs more than $274 billion in nationwide health care.  Diabetes accounts for $98.2 billion annually in medical costs and $40 billion annually in indirect costs.

Research (and common sense) shows that healthy employees increase production and profit.  It should be a ‘no brainer’ that businesses do everything in their power to encourage the health and wellness of those employees.  But more often than not, they don’t!

If the solution to the sky rocketing medical bills is just to live healthier lives, why is it so hard?

People say to me all the time “well you’re just a fitness trainer who’s crazy about exercise and I am not… I don’t have time to exercise… my work schedule doesn’t allow me to prepare healthy food all the time so I eat when I can from a fast food restaurant”.  The list and excuses go on…

Let’s discuss why your objections to getting healthy are ridiculous and expensive.

Time: There are 24 hours in a day. Don’t tell me you can’t commit at least one of them to exercising. Come on, you treat your household pet better than that.

Cost: So running outside, going hiking, swimming is expensive?  I don’t think so.  It costs nothing to go walking or running, swimming at your local community pool costs around $3, hiking costs nothing, and no offense, a minimum gym payment of $20 -$30 per month doesn’t even add up to a week’s worth of lattes or a night out.  Compare that to your first heart attack!

Spouse:  It’s time we took responsibility for our health and the health of our loved ones. No matter how many times you say “I love you just the way you are”, wouldn’t you actually prefer it if your spouse was a little leaner, had a fit and healthy body?  Wouldn’t you prefer that for yourself?

Education: There are resources out there to advise and help you to get back into shape through good exercise and healthy living.  I’m a highly educated fitness trainer and have developed a fitness program for all shapes and sizes.  My book, ‘Healthy Fitness Central’ is written for men and women and offers advice on exercising in the home, gym, track, pool or wherever else you have some space.  If people just took some of that advice and looked after their body’s a little better, just think of the impact on their lives, and ultimately or the whole health care system!

Genetics:  If you have a family history of diabetes II and high blood pressure, that means you have a family history of being fat and out of shape. DO something about it. Do you want your kids to be like that?

Motivation: Let me let you in on a little secret. One of the reasons why you aren’t motivated to work-out, is because you’re content to be who you are. You’re content to accept that you can never look or feel different. Your body hates to exercise because you hate it. Your body hates to exercise because you do the wrong things. You train the wrong way or you don’t train at all. Your body hates to exercise because you DON’T ever exercise.  Your body is toxic and out of shape.

You must get in shape. It’s not about motivation, it’s about managing to live as long as possible and be around for your family. You don’t need to drop 50lbs tomorrow. Dramatic weight loss programs are unrealistic and unhealthy.  But getting in shape through a structure exercise and nutrition program is realistic, achievable and life saving. Anyone can do it… YOU can do it!

The christinmcdowell.com website provides resources to help you stay committed to getting back in shape and staying healthy.  One of these resources is my 5 day per week boot camp.  If you live in Renton or Tukwila WA, I strongly recommend you join it.  Fitness boot camps provide the discipline and motivation to stick at a healthy lifestyle plan.  If you can’t make my boot camp, look for another one but get out there and start exercising.  It’s just not that hard!

If you don’t live in the area, you need to do some serious soul searching and figure out what objections are holding you back from getting your body back, getting in shape and feeling great. Write them down and then overcome them. If you want advice, email me and I will be happy to help.

So America, you really can help the economy and your budget by just taking a little better care of yourself.  So I’ll say again “Get Healthy, Save the American Economy”.

How to Lose Weight

Myths, Errors and what’s really Right!

SOMEHOW, the diet and fitness media and marketing world has put together all sorts of assortments that will make you think you will lose the weight, but only to be a selling gimmick! The weight loss industry is one of the largest out there, and why? Because people want a quick pill or device that will melt the fat off for them! Spare yourself the waste and realize this: Losing weight comes down to a very simple equation: If the amount of calories you eat in a day exceed the amount you burn, you will gain weight! If the amount you eat is less than you burn, you will lose weight!

So your journey of weight loss begins with a Healthy Tart style of eating! The 30 day detox is meant to clean up the damage you’ve done to your digestive, endocrine and cardiovascular system, and my workouts will help get you fit, strong and a fat burning machine! So if you haven’t already, you need to seriously bucker down and evaluate what and how much you are putting into your mouth!

Next is exercise. We know that exercise burns calories, and burning fat is all about burning calories.

The thing I want you to grasp is that burning fat and getting fit happen at the same time; they’re not independent of each other.

The more total calories you burn, the more fat you will burn. Therefore, you want your workouts to be challenging and intense!

How to Lose Weight!

How to Lose Weight!

If you’re mosying through your workouts, not pushing yourself, and are doing the same thing everyday, DON’T expect your body to change. It won’t. So, progress your workouts! Do things you don’t like doing! You’ll burn more total fat with more intense workouts, and you’ll get fitter, faster!

Don’t worry about the whole “Fat Burning Zone” and “Cardiovascular Zone”! It’s crap! The more calories you burn, the faster the weight will come off and the faster you will become fit!

The unfortunate thing is, if you’ve been sitting on your butt for the past 5-10 years, or even 6 months, you can’t go crazy your first day back, nor your first week! You need to follow your heart rate prescription until you healthy enough to turn on the juice! Don’t worry though, your workouts WILL seem challenging and will make you lose weight, if you haven’t been doing anything for a while. Focus on sticking to your 7 Day Layouts, (not missing workouts) and eating like a Healthy Tart.

I have made your workouts specifically and safely catered for where you are at, and what you can do, each step of the way. They are specifically designed to strengthen up your body, clear, clean and strengthen your cardiovascular system, and make you lose weight at the same time.

As variety is also essential for maximizing fat loss, I have included different kinds of exercise: swimming, aquajogging, track workouts, weight workouts, biking, stair stepper and elliptical. So FOLLOW MY WORKOUTS. They will make you succeed, no matter where you are!

My workouts are effective, challenging and rewarding. You will get stronger, healthier, more full of energy, and on your way to being in the best shape of your life.

The Issue of Metabolism

I was recently asked about metabolism and why people can’t just seem to lose weight. Here’s my reply:

In the issue of metabolism, metabolism in the breakdown of calories will be the same for everyone. When you exercise, you burn calories, and the rate at which you burn them wont change unless you have a bunch of muscle mass, for which we women don’t need to worry about.

SO- with metabolism, you’ve got to exercise if you want to burn fat and lose weight. (I’m not addressing the metabolism of food right yet). 95% of the trainers out there train their females WRONG. That is why I highly encourage you both to come to my event. You MUST exercise to burn calories- lots of them. So this doesn’t mean weight training, riding on some stationary bike or even walking (unless you weigh 100lbs too much), this means running, swimming, sprinting- stuff that will burn SERIOUS calories. The good thing is that this form of training is the kind of training that will benefit your cardiovascular health the best… You don’t want to start off right away with that form of training if you’re just starting out, or if you have medical problems, but if should be your goal to get there.

I will talk more in detail during my presentation at the next Healthy Tart event, if you cannot attend, please get a copy of my book, Healthy Fitness Central.

As far as your food metabolism, I haven’t yet heard a woman out there who has a high metabolism. Our hormones were made to store fat, that’s what we were “blessed” with… due to this God given natural phenomenon, we have got to evaluate the foods we are eating. If you think you eat well, but you’re not losing weight, there’s no catch. YOU’RE NOT eating as well as you think. We’re not freaks of nature. Our metabolisms are all pretty much the same. We can alter them through exercise and how much of it we do, and we can alter it through drugs and shots, (which I don’t endorse!).

I can be in denial as much as I want to of why I can’t lose weight, but really what it comes down to is, how much and the quality of food I am eating. You must eat CLEAN food. This probably doesn’t mean what you are thinking.

I want you to take a look at this woman.

http://ola-life.org/videos.php Look at her making Living Cacao Cream Pie, Nori Rolls, and Spring Rolls.

She eats 100% pure and organic food and she is vegan. She is the leanest natural person I’ve ever seen, and she’s pregnant. OBVIOUSLY she’s got it down. She’s serving her body and her body is serving her. She inspires me to want to change and be even better. She eats like a Healthy Tart would.

So, even though you are thinking you are eating the right stuff, you’re not if you’re not at your optimal weight. Something is wrong. Something you are DOING is wrong.

We can explore this further together in the Healthy Tart event.

Yes, your metabolism slightly slows down in your 40′s and 50′s.. WHY? Because you become LESS ACTIVE and you start losing muscle mass because you are LESS ACTIVE. Christine is a testament to that. She easily lost 60lbs and she’s over 50. It’s not rocket science people, it’s really quite simple.

Your Amazing Liver and its importance in detox programs

Your Amazing Liver Is your bodies own factory.  It takes deliveries, has its own sorting team and efficient distribution mechanisms. It is the largest organ of the body and weighs in at around 3lb

There are portal veins carrying blood from the stomach, spleen, pancreas, and small and large intestines so you can see why it is such an important part of digestion and immune function.

Digestive

  • Converts glucose to glucagon so that it can store for future energy production at which point it is converted back to glucose.
  • Metabolizes fat, it converts fat to a form in which it can be used by the tissues for energy
  • Protein metabolism is the breakdown of amino acids which is the by product of protein if you remember from the digestive system.  Removing the nitrogenous part of the amino acids which is not required to form new protein, then it is turned into urea which is then excreted in urine.  It is also where new, non essential amino acids are formed, those we do not need to get from food because our liver makes them for us.
  • Carrots and some green leaves provide us with carotene, the liver synthesises it and give us Vitamin A as we cannot get vitamin A directly from foods.
  • Fat Soluble vitamins A D E K are stored as well as copper and iron, unlike most of the other vitamins and minerals which are water soluble.  This is why we must not overdose on ADEK because our liver may be storing them for us.
  • Another really important link is that of the Gallbladder – the liver makes bile to be transported to the gallbladder so that it can emulsify fat.

Hormonal and Immune

  • Regulates blood clotting
  • Destroys erythrocytes and defends against microbes which means it is helping the immune system to be efficient
  • Destoxifies all the noxious substances that enter our bodies even those we did not invite in.  Chemicals in the food chain, fetilizers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides, these could all be on non organic apples !  as well as anywhere else in the food chain.  Hormones, antibiotics and other drugs used in agriculture, flavours, colours, preservatives, solvents, chemicals in the water supply, alcohol and so on……plus all the pollution, body and hair products….the list goes on and your liver has to do ALL of this work, no wonder it gets hot.
  • There are two procedures for dealing with the toxins, Activation which gets them out of storage and conjugation which means they are combined with other substances and eliminated as waste.  If the liver is not efficient these toxins can be activated or let loose and cause free radical damage which can affect the brain and mood factors.  So the tidier your factory unit is the easier it can collect, re-arrange and distribute.
  • Inactivation of hormones including insulin and glucagon, those involved in the digestive system and also those of the hormonal or endocrine system mainly the Thyroid, Cortisol (stress hormone) and the sex hormones.  So here is an example of how the digestion and hormones are linked.
  • The liver also produces heat, as it uses lots of energy performing all the jobs it has to do.

Diseases of the Liver

Alcohol Excess

Fatty liver

A build-up of fat occurs within liver cells in most people who regularly drink heavily. In itself, fatty liver is not usually serious and does not cause symptoms. Fatty liver will usually reverse if you stop drinking heavily.

Alcoholic hepatitis

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The inflammation can range from mild to severe.

  • Mild hepatitis may not cause any symptoms. The only indication of inflammation may be an abnormal level of liver enzymes in the blood which can be detected by a blood test. However, in some cases the hepatitis becomes persistent (chronic), which can gradually damage the liver and eventually cause cirrhosis.
  • A more severe hepatitis tends to cause symptoms such as feeling sick, jaundice (yellowing of the skin caused by a high level of bilirubin – a chemical normally metabolised in the liver), generally feeling unwell, and sometimes pain over the liver.
  • A very severe bout of alcoholic hepatitis can quickly lead to liver failure. This can cause deep jaundice, blood clotting problems, confusion, coma, bleeding into the guts, and is often fatal.

Alcoholic cirrhosis

  • Cirrhosis is a condition where normal liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue (fibrosis). The scarring tends to be a gradual process. The scar tissue affects the normal structure and re-growth of liver cells. Liver cells become damaged and die as scar tissue gradually develops. The scar tissue can also affect the blood flow through the liver which can cause ‘back pressure’ in the blood vessels which bring blood to the liver.
  • About 1 in 10 heavy drinkers will eventually develop cirrhosis. It tends to occur after 10 or more years of heavy drinking, although cirrhosis can develop in people who have never had alcoholic hepatitis.
  • Persistent viral hepatitis and some hereditary and metabolic diseases may cause cirrhosis, so if you have another persistent liver disease, and drink heavily, you are likely to increase your risk of developing cirrhosis.

Viral Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver caused by a virus)

  • Hepatitis (A B C, the most common conditions)
  • Hepatitis is a general term that means inflammation of the liver.

Hepatitis A is found in the stools (faeces) of people with hepatitis A. It is transmitted when a person puts something in his or her mouth that has been contaminated with the faeces of an affected person.  The virus can also be spread by eating raw or undercooked shellfish collected from water that has been contaminated by sewage.

  • People who are infected can start spreading the infection about 1 week after their own exposure. People who do not have symptoms can still spread the virus.
  • Anyone contracting Hepatitis A will have the ability to overcome this as the liver will completely heal itself.  Unlike the following B & C

Hepatitis B is contracted through with an infected person, also semen and saliva which may contain some blood.  This is a very infectious disease, sometimes the carrier does not show any signs of sickness but they can transmit it to other people.

The acute phase means that most people will recover completely, if for some reason the situation becomes  chronic  the infection may never go away and it will cause all manner of other illnesses.
The younger you are when you become infected with the hepatitis B virus, the more likely you are to develop chronic hepatitis B. The rates of progression to chronic hepatitis B are as follows:

  • 90% of infants infected at birth
  • 30% of children infected at age 1-5 years
  • 6% of people infected after age 5 years
  • 5-10% of infected adults

Hepatitis C
If the inflammation is not reversed, it becomes ongoing and can cause chronic liver disease, which can be serious or even fatal.

  • At least 75% of people infected with hepatitis C develop chronic hepatitis C.
  • If the disease progresses to the point at which the liver begins to fail the only treatment is liver transplantation.
  • Hepatitis C is an increasing public health concern in the United States and throughout the world and  is one of the most common causes of chronic liver disease in the United States and the most common cause of chronic viral hepatitis
  • About 4 million people in the United States have antibodies to HCV, meaning they have been infected with the virus at some point; as many as half of them do not know they have the infection.

Liver Cancer
There are two types

  • Primary liver cancer – Cancer that begins in the liver known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); a cancer that begins in the main cells of the liver which are known as the hepatocytes.
HCC is responsible for 1,500 deaths in the UK each year. It is more common among men, and those over the age of 60 are more likely to be affected by it.
Another type of primary liver cancer is cholangiocarcinoma, which also known as cancer of the bile duct.
  • Secondary liver cancer – Most cases of liver cancer are known as secondary this means that the cancer started somewhere else in your body before spreading (metastasising) to your liver.

There are of course many other symptoms which are a by product of a compromised liver and these include:

  • Allergies and Intolerances
  • Anxiety attacks
  • Brain fog
  • Candida
  • Lack of energy
  • Poor eyesight
  • Headaches and Migraine
  • Heart Problems
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Menopause and PMT
  • Mood swings
  • Fluid retention
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • Osteoporosis

You might be saying – we have read about these symptoms elsewhere so how can these be related to the liver – simply because the liver is your factory and if it is full of toxic garbage it cannot fulfil its role in manufacturing, storing and distribution of nutrients to support the body.

This all sounds gloomy, well let me tell you it is !  You cannot possibly live a full and healthy life if you put garbage in your mouth, do not get fresh air, fresh water and exercise in the right combinations.

First thing to do is follow the 30 day programme, this will get your liver cleansed and working efficiently.

On becoming a Healthy Tart

My daughter and her family came to visit me for Christmas 2007.  I had been gradually putting on weight for a few years a little bit at a time and doing very little exercise… just a bit of walking, occasional tennis and a lot of xBox (I still love Halo).

I turned 50 in 2005 and seemed to just put on weight after that.  I assumed it was part of being older, slowing metabolism and all that.  I wasn’t doing anything much different than before and had always maintained a reasonable body weight.  At least, no-one was calling me fat (to my face).

I knew I had to get my weight and general level of fitness under control as I had embarked on the Healthy Lifestyle project with Trisha Stewart (a excellent nutritionist I had met in England) and if I get involved in a project, I have to totally believe in it and get fully immersed.  Being overweight and unfit wasn’t going to cut it.

I had been working with Trisha Stewart on her book ‘Healthy Tart’ for several months and it was time to put the advice contained in that book into practice. So on January 2nd, 2008 at 52 and weighing in at 215lbs, my quest to regain my body, my health and my optimal weight began.

In the past, I’ve been a bit of a fast food junkie.  Not McDonald’s so much as Denny’s, Shari’s, Applebees, Chinese, Mexican, Thai… and any other restaurant that would get me out of cooking myself.  My freezer was full of microwave meals.  Trisha’s book, Healthy Tart, formed the basis of my nutritional journey to get my body back.  One of the first things Trisha tells you to do is clear out all the garbage from your freezer and fridge, and unfortunately I don’t think she meant eat it… so out went all the microwave meals, ice cream, diet soda… in fact everything that tasted good but was filled with chemicals.  Also had to get some semi decent knives.

The ‘30 day detox’ forms the core of Healthy Tart as it’s what kick starts your system into getting on track and healthy.  More on that later.

At the same time as the nutritional element of my journey, I had to start exercising.  When Trisha and I started discussing the Healthy Lifestyle series, it occurred to me that we should have a full workout / fitness training aspect to the program so a couple of months earlier I decided to look for a suitable personal trainer.  As luck / fate would have it, a few days later I went to my weekly business network meeting and in walked a tracked suited, bespeckeled blonde who introduced herself as Christin McDowell, personal trainer!

My bullet point list for personal trainer was:

  • Female
  • Highly Qualified
  • Assertive
  • Attractive
  • Able to speak and present well

Christin looked to be perfect for the task so I asked her if she would like to go for a coffee and discuss a proposition I had for her.  She accepted.

At that meeting I told her about Trisha and the project.  She loved the idea and was excited to be involved.  I also told her that as project leader I had to get in shape and lose some weight.  I mentioned that although I was somewhat overweight, I was still pretty fit.  She managed to stifle her laughter.  Little did I know what she had planned for me!

At this point I should say that anyone in their early 50s deciding to turn back the clock and shed 30 years of self abuse through bad diet and lack of exercise is in for some hard work, both physically and mentally.

So the stage was set… I had a nutritional / diet plan and a personal trainer.  Time to get to work!

Healthy Eating While Detoxing? Absolutely!

How to have a healthy eating programme and still be on a detox ! Yes it is totally doable!

What is all this nonsense about detoxing, the body does it naturally, that is what our elimination organs are for – you know the ones – the liver, kidneys, bowels and lungs – BUT wait!

Guess what? the poor dietary habits of most people has led to a SEIZURE of these vital organs, they CANNOT take any more junk food and drink – plus the amount of pollution in not just the atmosphere but at home too – you know, all those deodorant sprays, household cleaners and polishers, plug in air freshners to-boot!

So! We need to detox – but NOT to get rid of last night’s food and alcohol binge! It is much more than that, the accumulation of toxins over a period of time that has led to you feeling under par at best, or sick with some kind of symptoms that are causing you a health concern…..

And you think you can do it in 1-2 Days ! NOT a chance – so don’t even bother trying or wasting your money on a quick fix – there isn’t one!  I can guarantee that.

Guess what though, I am here to save your life, provide you with a step by step programme that is doable, no starvation and plenty of nutrients, to not only give your body the nutrients that it is lacking through poor dietary habits but to help to cleanse and heal your body, get it into an alkaline state from a very acidic state and to bring about that health and vitality that you have long forgotten.

I know, through my vast experience with many hundreds of clients that have come to me feeling unwell, that the only way forward is to “clear the decks”  you know, like when your kitchen sink is full, the dishwasher wants emptying, the kitchen bin is full and the floor is covered in toys, shoes or whatever, you need to “clean the decks” before you start anything else.

It is the same with your body you have to clean up before you can expect it to perform as it should.  In order to “clean the decks” you must not throw any more rubbish at it – the 30 day, step by step programme, that I have worked with clients hundreds of times does exactly that!  You don’t have to think about anything, just follow the plan and you are guaranteed results.

Once you have completed this task you will feel so much better and actually alive, but you will have learned to listen in to what your body is trying to tell you – remember the article I wrote on “are you eating with your brain”?

You should never need to detox again – because hopefully you will continue to work with this programme whilst adding in some of the foods you would like to have – BALANCE is the key to good health.
